Bulacan execs back new airport in province

Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado said the province was giving its full support to the proposed New Manila International Airport (NMIA) to be built by conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC).

The governor’s announcement came after the provincial board’s unanimous approval of Board Resolution No. 316, which expressed support for the National Economic Development Authority decision to approve the Bulacan airport project.

“We assure all Filipinos, especially the people of Bulacan that the province will do its best to support the nation’s dream of a world-class international airport,” Alvarado said.

Massive investments

He said the provincial government would work closely with SMC and national agencies once construction of the new airport, proposed in Bulakan town, begins.

Vice Gov. Daniel Fernando, presiding officer of the provincial board, said a new airport in Bulacan will complement massive public investments in Clark, Pampanga, especially the creation of the new Clark Green City.

Returning OFWs

The board resolution also cited the project’s potential to entice overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to return and take part in the construction of NMIA.

Earlier, the country’s biggest business group, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), said it saw Bulacan as the next growth area of the country because of several projects in the pipeline, ongoing or being planned.

PCCI president Alegria Sibal-Limjoco, in a statement recently, said some member companies of PCCI were considering Bulacan as a new location for offices or factories. —WITH A REPORT FROM ROY STEPHEN C. CANIVEL
