MANILA, Philippines – Strong waves along the Port Area in Manila took the life of a pastor over the weekend, serving as another warning to locals to keep away from Manila Bay, especially in this rainy season.
The body of Mario Valera, 43, pastor of the World Mission Community Church and resident of New Site, Baseco Compound in Tondo district, was recovered Saturday afternoon, a day after strong waves engulfed him as he was walking along the sea wall in the locale.
In his spot report, the case investigator, Police Officer 2 Roderick Pacilan of the Manila Police District Homicide section, said Valera and several companions were planning to take a swim in Manila Bay on Friday, but even before they could step into the waters, strong waves slammed at the group until they fell in.
One of Valera’s companions, Ricky Indoma, who survived the ordeal, testified Valera had tried to save his nephew, but was swept away by the strong currents in his attempt.
Search and rescue operations conducted by the barangay (village) immediately after Valera’s disappearance proved fruitless.
Valera’s body was eventually recovered 3 p.m. on Saturday by the Philippine Coast Guard Delpan station, along with barangay kagawad Lani Cantilang. His body was found near Pier 15, Port Area, already bloated and decomposing.
Valera’s family has brought his body to Funeraria Floresco for funeral services.
