‘Real coup d’état’ just happens; no announced, exact date – Escudero

Senator Francis Escudero has expressed qualms about the so-called “Red October,” pointing out that while there might be legitimate reports on plans to unseat President Rodrigo Duterte, a “real coup d’état” would not have an announced and precise date.

“Sa karanasan natin sa mga coup d’état, kapag alam na ng gobyerno, kapag alam na nating lahat, may petsa pa, malamang sa malamang hindi totoo ‘yan,” Escudero said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer on Thursday.

“Ang totoong coup d’etat nangyayari na lang ika nga, sa kalagitnaan ng gabi o hatinggabi.  Walang nakaka-alam n‘yan, ‘yong totoong coup d’etat.”

“Dahil ‘yong coup d’etat na inaanunsyo sa media may sapat na araw pa, totoo man ‘yan no’ng simula eh hindi na totoo ‘yan ngayon,” he said in jest.

Mr. Duterte previously said the Communist Party of the Philippines, Magdalo group, and political rivals have been conniving to overthrow him. The Armed Forces of the Philippines later said the CPP’s New People’s Army was reinforcing to oust the President in a plot dubbed as “Red October.”

Escudero also believed that the name of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV might have only been dragged into ouster plots because of his past actions – being involved in the failed 2003 Oakwood Mutiny and 2007 Manila Peninsula siege.

“Marahil nai-uugnay lang si Senator Trillanes dyan dahil sa mga naunang yugto sa kanyang buhay, eh minsan niya na ring ginawa ‘yan, dalawang ulit pa nga,” he said.

“So siguro kadikit na ng pangalan niya ang mga pagdududa kaugnay niyan, lalo na sa oposisyon,” he added. /kga
