More Filipinos believe police ‘nanlaban’ claim – SWS data

More Filipinos are believing the “nanlaban” claim of the police, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed.

The result of the survey released on Tuesday showed a 10-point jump, from 17 percent in September 2017 to 27 percent in June 2018, on the percentage of Filipinos who think that authorities are “telling the truth” when they claim that those killed drug suspects resisted arrest.

Meanwhile, the survey showed an 11-point drop in the percentage of people who do not believe the “nanlaban” claim, from 37 percent in September 2017 to 26 percent in June 2018.

SWS said the latest results show the net opinion about the truthfulness of the police claim to zero, with believers at 27 percent and non-believers at 26 percent.

The undecided was at 47 percent, up two percent from the September 2017 result of 45 percent.

“This brings the net opinion about the truthfulness of the police to net zero in June 2018,” the SWS said.

The survey was conducted from June 27 to June 30, 2018, using face-to-face interview with 1,200 respondents aged 18 years old and above nationwide.

SWS said the respondents were asked the question:

“Sa kampanya ng gobyerno laban sa illegal na droga, ang kapulisan po ba ay: Talagang nagsasabi ng totoo;Malamang nagsasabi ng totoo; Hindi tiyak kung nagsasabi ng totoo; Talagang hindi nagsasabi ng totoo na ang napapatay nilang suspect ay talagang nanlaban sa kanila?”

(“In the government’s campaign against illegal drug, the police is: Definitely telling the truth; Probably telling the truth; Undecided if telling the truth or not; Probably not telling the truth; Definitely not telling the truth that the suspects they killed really resisted them?”)

The SWS also noted that the net opinion on the truthfulness of the “nanlaban” claim by police was lowest in Metro Manila at -25, followed by Balance Luzon at -6 the Visayas at -4 and in Mindanao at +31.

The survey had a margin of error of ±3% for national percentages and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
