Senator Nancy Binay said her father is a living testament that critics of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos had been arrested during martial law.
This was contrary to former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s earlier claim that not even one was arrested for their political beliefs or criticism of Marcos during martial rule.
“Name me one person that was arrested because of political or religious belief during that period. None. Name me one person that was arrested simply because he criticized President Marcos. None,” Enrile said in a tête-à-tête with Marcos’ son and namesake, Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” Marcos Jr.
Binay said her father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, was arrested during the martial law regime.
“Nakulong din ang Daddy ko,” she told reporters on Monday.
“Nakulong din sya kaya nga habang pinagbubuntis ako, dinadalaw ng Mommy ko ‘yung Daddy ko sa kulungan.”
“Kaya nasa tyan pa lang ako, na-stress na ako,” she added.
In fact, the senator said she was growing up being “makibaka” or “Maki” by her father.
She also recalled joining protests then, marching from Buendia in Makati to Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.
Asked why she thinks Enrile had a different narrative about martial law, the lady legislator said only the former could answer why he had a different interpretation.
But she insisted that based on her experience, she grew up joining rallies against the Marcos regime.
“May struggle talaga na nagaganap,” she said.
“Iba lang kasi yung kinalalagayan ni Sen. Enrile noon. Iba rin yung kinalalagyan namin. Kaya nagkakroon ng difference sa perspectives,” she pointed out. /kga
