DID YOU KNOW: 124th birth anniversary of Jose Yulo
Today, Sept. 24, is the 124th birth anniversary of lawyer and statesman Jose Yulo, the only chief magistrate who was not appointed by a president.
He refused to serve as head of government under the Japanese occupation, opting to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1942 to 1944.
Born in 1894, he obtained his law degree from the University of the Philippines and passed the bar in 1915.

Throughout his career, Yulo served as justice secretary, speaker of the National Assembly and Chief Justice.
He died on Oct. 27, 1976, at the age of 82. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
