A week after Typhoon “Ompong” (international name Mangkhut) battered the Philippines, a new tropical depression is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility this Sunday.

The tropical cyclone was spotted 2,175 kilometers east of Southern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Senior weather specialist Chris Perez said that the weather disturbance, which will be locally named “Paeng,” currently packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 55 kph.

It moved north-northwest at 10 kph.

Perez said the tropical depression might cross extreme northern Luzon or head toward southern Japan while inside PAR.

The tropical cyclone is currently too far to bring rains in the country.
