Senator Joel Villanueva has called on the public to learn from the disadvantages of martial law to block the repeat of the “dark days.”
Villanueva made this call as the nation commemorates on Friday the 46th anniversary of the martial law declaration by late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
“Let us learn from our history so that the dark days will not be repeated,” he said in a statement.
Villanueva said that instead of overlooking the past, Filipinos should remember thousands of Desaparecidos, or those who disappeared and were presumably killed during the martial law period.
He said the nation should also remember the “heroes who fought against the oppressive reign of the Marcos regime.”
“Let us not forget the dark part of history where opposition was suppressed, freedoms were curtailed and rights were violated,” he said.
