2 hurt as tornado strikes in Marikina

Two persons were reportedly injured while several buildings were damaged after a tornado struck Barangay Sta. Elena, Marikina City on Friday afternoon.

According to a report from the Marikina City Police, local officials including Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro and the police immediately rushed to the aid of two residents, later identified as Paul John Campos and Janet Juanzo.

Campos and Juanzo were brought to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

The Marikina police said that while preparations were ongoing for Typhoon “Ompong,” the tornado was spotted in the said barangay.  Left damaged by the twister were the Our Lady of Abandoned Church, the Kapitan Moy convention center, an office building and the electrical lines of the nearby Marikina Shoe Museum.

The incident also led to power interruptions along J.P. Rizal Street, Sta. Elena, and other parts of Barangay San Roque.  /muf
