6-meter storm surges likely in Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Sur – Pagasa

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned Thursday that storm surges of up to 6 meters are likely in Cagayan, Isabela, and Ilocos Sur due to typhoon “Ompong” (international name: Mangkhut).

“Ito po ay based sa historical storm surge data. Sa past events, maari pong abutin ng 5 to 6 meters,” weather forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said in a press briefing.

It is also likely that storm surges will hit the coastal areas of Aparri.

Peñaranda said they will release storm surge warning updates to identify the exact areas which may be affected by the storm surges.

Ompong is expected to make landfall over Cagayan-Isabela on Saturday morning.

Northern and Central Luzon will be widely affected by the typhoon, the strongest to hit the country this year, Pagasa said. /kga
