1 dead, 3 hurt in Basilan clan war

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A person was killed while three others were wounded in an attack that the police blamed on a long-standing rido (clan war) between two families in Ungkaya Pukan town in Basilan province.

Senior Supt. Rufino Inot, Basilan Provincial Police director, said Asraf Kumbisan was killed on the spot while Nilhisah Abi, 52, a barangay kagawad; Muammar Ahlam, 20; and Hulmin Lawhil, 34, were wounded in a shooting incident in Sitio Camalig, Barangay Bohe Pahu in Ungkaya Pukan on Wednesday night.

Police identified the attacker as Mujahab Elong, a resident of the place, who had a grudge against Kumbisan for allegedly burning their house years ago.

“There has been a long-standing grudge between two families but unfortunately, most of the victims were not targets, nadamay lang,” said Colonel Ivan San Jose, commander of the 18th Infantry Battalion.

Inot said the wounded victims were brought to Zamboanga City for further medical treatment. JULIE ALIPALA
