Dole issues holiday pay reminder

The Department of Labor and Employment has reminded all private sector employers to pay their workers double on Monday, National Heroes Day, a regular holiday.

“Proper observance of the pay rules on regular holidays and special nonworking days will lead to more productive and competent employees,” said Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

Aug. 27, which falls on a Monday, was declared a regular holiday nationwide by virtue of Proclamation No. 269.

An employee who reports for work on a regular holiday is entitled to receive 200 percent of his or her basic wage for the first eight hours.

Those working beyond eight hours should receive an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate, Bello said.

For work done during a regular holiday that also falls on an employee’s rest day, he or she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of the daily rate of 200 percent.

For overtime work during a holiday that also falls on his or her rest day, he or she shall be paid an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate on said day.

If the employee did not work, he or she shall be paid 100 percent of his or her salary. — TINA G. SANTOS
