‘Shabu suppliers’ catering to San Juan jeepney drivers fall

Two men suspected of supplying “shabu” (crystal meth) to jeepney drivers in San Juan City were arrested in a police operation on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Supt. Dindo Reyes, the city police chief, identified the suspects as Bernardo Alfonso, 51, of Rizal province and Alexander Cruz, 55, of Pasay City. They were entrapped in a buy-bust operation on Annapolis Street after being placed under surveillance for weeks, Reyes said.

An undercover team led by Senior Insp. Edwin Malabanan arranged a meeting with Alfonso for a drug purchase, but the suspect said he would also be bringing along his supplier, later identified as Cruz. Caught carrying three sachets of suspected shabu, the two men were believed to be catering to drug-using jeepney drivers, particularly those plying the Annapolis-Greenhills route.

The San Juan police also gathered that Cruz spent time in the Pasay City jail from 2012 to 2016 for possession of illegal drugs, while Alfonso was on the drug watch list of Binangonan, Rizal, police. —Jhesset O. Enano and Cedrix Perez
