Members and supporters of the Liberal Party (LP) commemorated two important events on Tuesday: the 47th year of the Plaza Miranda bombing and the 35th death anniversary of former Senator Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
Aquino is the father of former President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III and husband of the late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino.
On Tuesday, dressed in yellow, LP members and supporters flocked to the historic Plaza Miranda for a 30-minute program that included a group singing of what is considered as the Philippines’ most patriotic song, “Bayan Ko.”
Jose Orojo, a member of LP from Bulacan, said Aquino’s death was one of the most painful moments of his life.
Orojo said he cried for three straight days mourning the death of the former senator.
“Napakaimportante po sa atin ng August 21, huwag po nating kalilimutan. Tayo po, simula sa araw na ito, ay nag suot na ng kulay dilaw,” Orojo said.
The color yellow has become the color of the LP that was headed by Aquino himself.
Aquino was assassinated shortly after he was escorted out of a China Airlines plane by military men upon arriving in the Philippines from the US past noon on August 21, 1983.
The song “Ang Bayan Ko” was sung by supporters of the Aquino during his wake and funeral.
Aquino’s death triggered protests and calls for then President Ferdinand Marcos to step down from office. “Bayan Ko” was often sung during these protests and demonstrations. /vvp
