Senator Sherwin Gatchalian stressed on Sunday the importance of immediately upgrading Manila’s air transportation infrastructure following the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) runaway mishap.
“We need to build better airports and more runways to keep up with the steadily rising air traffic above our skies. Improving our air transportation infrastructure is critical to fostering economic growth and tourism development,” Gatchalian said in a statement.
According to Gatchalian, the government must ensure that accidents like the Naia mishap on Thursday that derailed hundreds of flights and stranded passengers “will not be able to paralyze air transportation going to and from the capital city of our country.”
The senator also called on the Senate to immediately act on his resolution seeking to investigate the current status of Metro Manila airports to aid the government in crafting a concrete plan to improve air transportation in the capital city.
On Thursday night, Xiamen Air Flight MF8667 skidded off the Naia runway and caused disruptions to several international and domestic flights. /ee
