Zambo build site yields 32 WWII bombs

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Thirty-two World War II vintage bombs have been unearthed in one of the construction sites inside Zamboanga City State Polytechnic University (ZCSPU), which was the site of a military camp during the war.

Roy Valesco, a teacher at the university, said at least 22 of the bombs were recovered on Friday morning by a bomb squad at the site.

On Aug. 7, a total of 11 bombs were dug out in separate areas inside the construction site.

Valesco said the ZCSPU demolished the old high school building, known as the Zamboanga School of Arts and Trade, to put up a new one.

But around 3 p.m. on Aug. 7, one of the construction workers at the site accidentally dug a bomb.

When they dug deeper, they found more bombs, mostly cannon projectiles.

Valesco said school authorities put up barriers and barricades in the four construction sites where the bombs were recovered on Aug. 7. —JULIE ALIPALA
