Mascot for endangered sea turtles unveiled

CITY OF ILAGAN—Hawksbill, the mascot, will promote the preservation of the endangered hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) found in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park in Isabela province.

The mascot was unveiled on Wednesday in Dinapigue town, said Racquel Caldez, information officer of the provincial environment and natural resources office. Designated as the Sierra Madre’s flagship marine species, hawksbill sea turtles grow up to 1 meter (3 feet) in length and weigh 80 kilograms.

The mascot will serve as a symbol “for partnership, change and stewardship,” and will drum up improvements for the community and the natural environment.

It hopes to draw the attention of the youth “who will serve as future warriors to protect and preserve marine resources and creatures,” Caldez said . —VILLAMOR VISAYA JR.
