OLONGAPO CITY — Four children who leaped into a swollen river in Olongapo City were rescued on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 12).

Villagers found the four children on the slope of an embankment near a forest in Barangay Old Cabalan, said Angelito Layug, chief of the Olongapo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

“The rescued children are being treated at James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital,” Layug told the Inquirer.

A girl, identified as 13-year-old Christile Traquina, 13, was still missing as of 6 p.m., Layug said.

The children were reported missing after they jumped into the swollen river here during a heavy Sunday afternoon downpour.

The children, aged 10 to 14, were swept away by a strong current at about 11 a.m., Layug said.

He said the children were playing under the bridge near the river in Barangay Sta. Rita when they were accosted by village watchmen. /atm
