The low pressure area (LPA) east of Aparri, Cagayan has intensified into a tropical depression locally named “Karding,” the state weather bureau said Tuesday noon.
However, Karding is not expected to make landfall in any part of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) noted.
The LPA was last spotted 1,220 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan. It packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 65 kph, according to the latest weather bulletin of Pagasa.
Meanwhile, Pagasa spotted the other LPA on the western side of the country at 420 kilometers west of Subic, Zambales.
Pagasa said Karding and the LPA would likely enhance the southwest monsoon, which would bring scattered moderate to at times heavy rains over Northern Luzon and the western section of Central Luzon starting Friday (10 August). /kga
