August was declared Sight Saving Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 40 signed on July 5, 1954 by President Ramon Magsaysay to promote awareness of the importance of proper eye care and blindness prevention. Latest records from the Department of Health show there are some 500,000 visually impaired Filipinos.
