Unesco denounces slay of Albay broadcaster
LEGAZPI CITY – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has condemned the killing of Joey Llana, a radio broadcaster in Albay.
In a statement, Audrey Azoulay, director-general of Unesco, urged the authorities to investigate the case.
“I urge the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Impunity must not be allowed to embolden those who use violence to restrict press freedom and freedom of information,” Azoulay said.
Llana, 43, was gunned down on July 20, while leaving his house in Barangay Peñafrancia in Daraga town, to go to work at radio station DWZR where he has a block time program.
Superintendent Benito Dipad, chief of Daraga police, said the case was still being investigated. MA. APRIL MIER
