Days after the alleged killer of Ombudsman assistant special prosecutor Madonna Joy Ednaco-Tanyag was shot dead while in police custody, President Duterte said the fate that befell the suspect had evened the score.

“But by God’s mercy, he is dead, so it’s quits,” Mr. Duterte said, referring to Angelito Avenido Jr., who was killed by the police after he allegedly tried to grab the gun of one of his escorts who were transferring him from Camp Karingal to the Quezon City jail on Saturday.

The President took note that Avenido, who was tagged in the June 5 killing of Tanyag in what the police considered a robbery, was “the one who stabbed the Ombudsman (prosecutor) who was pregnant.”

Latest ‘gun-grabber’

Avenido’s case was the latest incident of suspects being killed while in detention after reportedly making an attempt to snatch a police officer or jail guard’s firearm.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said it would investigate Saturday’s incident but has yet to relieve or suspend P03 Ramil Langa, the officer involved.

Meanwhile, Avenido’s father and live-in partner appeared to have accepted the QCPD’s account of why the suspect was killed.

Angelito Sr., who went to Camp Karingal on Tuesday to get his son’s belongings, said the family would no longer demand an autopsy or file a complaint.

“He (my son) really wanted to change and start a new life … and this happened,” the father of five said, breaking down in tears. He said he had lost another son in a stabbing incident.

Jailed in GenSan

The younger Avenido grew up in Gen. Santos City where he once spent time in jail for causing trouble while drunk, according to the suspect’s live-in partner, Georgina Ricafort. “He spent a longer time behind bars because he was found carrying marijuana,” she recalled.

“We have accepted what happened to him,” said Ricafort, who has no children with Avenido. “Maybe he went berserk after thinking too much. When I last visited him (in jail), he refused to talk about his case or what happened to him inside his cell.”
