PH Coast Guard tightens security after Basilan blast
Following the directive of Department of Transportation chief Arthur Tugade, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) strengthened on Wednesday its security measures after the Basilan bomb attack.
“All PCG Units are directed to level up to maximum security alert and intensify vigilance at all times as strong presence of terrorist/international bombers thereby threatening public safety and security.” Admiral Elson E. Hermogino, commandant of PCG, said in a statement.
Hermogino ordered to tighten the security operations on all PCG units, particularly in the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao.
“The district commander in Southwestern Mindanao is there to assess the need to augment personnel in coordination with other security forces in the area,” Hermogino said
Following the directive of Hermogino, acting commander of PCG in Southern Mindanao Captain Joseph M. Coyme called for an emergency meeting and enforced a strict implementation of tightened security practices.
The strict security measures covered all types of vessels arriving and departing the island provinces like Basilan, Jolo, and neighboring islets.
The baggage of the passengers going in and out of the island are also subjected to inspection and paneling of K9 units of the PCG agents.
The PCG also advised the public to report to the agency any suspected activities and to remain vigilant at all costs.
Tugade earlier ordered all transportation units to implement stricter security measures in all ports and terminals following the Basilan blast that killed 11 people. /je
