The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on Monday expressed sorrow over the passing of its former chairman, distinguished essayist and historian Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil.
In a Facebook post, the NHCP lauded Nakpil’s works in Philippine history and culture and her contributions to the development of the agency, saying that these “will live on and serve as a guide for succeeding generations of Filipinos.”
“We join all who love the history and heritage of the Philippines in mourning the passing away of Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil,” the agency said.
Nakpil, 96, passed away before dawn morning Monday, her daughter Gemma Cruz-Araneta confirmed.

From 1967 to 1971, she served as the chair of the NHCP and was elected to the executive board of the UNESCO Paris in 1982.
Nakpil had also worked for the Manila Times, Malaya, Evening News, The Philippines Herald, and the Manila Chronicle as a staff member, editorial columnist, and editor.
As an acclaimed writer, she published 10 books including a widely successful autobiographical trilogy: “Myself, Elsewhere,” “Legends & Adventures,” and “Exeunt.” Myself, Everywhere” won the National Book Award in 2006.
In addition, she contributed lectures, essays, and short stories to publications in the Philippines and other countries. /ee
