The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) will conduct a deeper investigation into the death of Angelito Avenido Jr., the suspect in the killing of Ombudsman Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag.

This development came after Avenido was shot dead when he reportedly grabbed the gun of his police escort inside the Quezon City police headquarters in Camp Karingal.

QCPD director Chief Supt. Joselito Esquivel said on Saturday that the district will be conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

“Hindi natin alam kung ano ang takbo ng kanyang utak kaya paiimbistegahan nga natin yung ibang attendant fact na nag-lead doon sa pagbubuno nila ng baril,” Esquivel said in an interview with dzbb.

(We really do not know what’s going on in his mind, that is why we want to investigate the attendant fact that leads to the grappling of the gun.)

The QCPD director also said the incident happened during police booking procedure so Avenido was not really on handcuffs.

“Prinoproseso nga siya eh, syempre yung kukunan ng picture, kukunan ng fingerprint, mahirap naman yung ano (kung naka-hand-cuffed), although may guwardya naman siya,” Esquivel said.

(He was undergoing procedure, the usual picture taking, fingerprinting, so it is hard if he was on handcuffs, although he is under guard.)

Avenido was reportedly killed after the police was prompted to take action regarding the incident.

Avenido was about to be transferred to Quezon City Jail when the incident happened. He was then brought to the East Avenue Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival./jpv
