DOJ finding way to keep suspects from fleeing

The Department of Justice (DOJ) would soon issue new rules on how to prevent persons under criminal investigation from leaving the country without a court hold departure order.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the department was revising its policy of placing criminal suspects under the so-called immigration lookout bulletin order after the Supreme Court made final its decision in April to prohibit the DOJ from preventing crime suspects from traveling abroad without a court order.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld its unanimous decision in April declaring unconstitutional DOJ Circular No. 41 of 2010. —Dona Z. Pazzibugan
