Today, July 20, is the 72nd death anniversary of Gil Montilla, Speaker of the first National Assembly. Montilla earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ateneo de Manila University and took up law at the University of Sto. Tomas. Born on Sept. 11, 1876, he served as Speaker from 1935 to 1938. He later headed the Philippine Sugar Administration and became president of the Nacionalista Party. He died in 1946.—Chlarine Gianan
