MMDA leads ‘unannounced’ Metro shake drill

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday led Metro Manila residents in staging an “unannounced” earthquake drill in preparation for the expected 7.2 magnitude tremblor or “The Big One.”

The drill started at exactly 1:00 in the afternoon with alarms aired by radio stations.

The National Telecommunications Company (NTC) meanwhile announced the drill at around 11:00 in the morning.

Earlier, the MMDA said it will make the conduct of its fourth earthquake drill a “surprise” as “no one can predict when an earthquake will happen.”

“We call it drill to check kung ano yung mga pagkukulang. We don’t expect this to be 100 percent successful,” said Jojo Garcia, General Manager of the MMDA.

Garcia also revealed the MMDA is eyeing to holding two more earthquake drills within this year. /muf
