Senate Minority Floor Leader Franklin Drilon said he is “not optimistic” that the approved Bangsamoro Basic Law, now the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), can promote good governance and, thus, end poverty in the region.
Drilon said this as his proposed anti-dynasty measure in the then BBL was scrapped in the Senate’s version of the law. Drilon believed it could have been the solution to the prevailing poverty in Bangsamoro.
“I am not optimistic that the BBL will result in good governance,” he stressed in a statement on Thursday.
“The failure of governance in the ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao), not only the decades-long conflict, is also to be blamed for the high incidence of poverty in the region,” he added.
The senator said the absence of this provision could compromise other measures for good leadership. These are the measures proposed by Congress.
“Unfortunately, the future of the Bangsamoro region will be in the hands of a very few families again, because of our failure to prevent political dynasty,” Drilon said.
The bicameral committee approved the reconciled version of the BOL on Wednesday. /jpv
