58,000 affected by heavy monsoon rains — DSWD

More than 58,000 persons have been affected by heavy monsoon rains and Tropical Storm Henry in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Mimaropa, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) disclosed on Wednesday.

The DSWD said its Disaster Response Management Bureau recorded about 14,291 families or 58,115 persons affected in the three regions.

From the 58,115 persons, about 5,697 of them have taken refuge in 45 evacuation centers in Metro Manila and Central Luzon, the DSWD disclosed.

The agency said 7,414 families or 26,903 persons were also reported to be staying with their relatives’ and friends’ houses in Central Luzon.

About 800 family food packs were distributed by the DSWD field office in Metro Manila to the affected areas in Marikina City and Quezon City, the DSWD said.

DSWD Secretary Virginia Orogo said their agency is ready to assist the affected local government units to help them respond to the needs of their constituents.

“Right now we are continuously waiting for request for augmentation assistance from the affected LGUs. Our concerned field offices are ready to deliver aid to them,” Orogo said in a statement.

“Our relief goods are ready. We have enough stock of relief supplies in our warehouses. We are always ready. We also hope that our barangays are also ready to assist our fellow citizens on the ground,” she added.   /vvp
