THE University of Perpetual Help System Dalta System posted its second straight win in women’s volleyball after routing Mapua in three sets, 25-1, 25-17, 25-9 yesterday in the 87th NCAA volleyball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
The Lady Altas, who plastered rookie team Lyceum Lady Pirates also in straight sets during the opener on Wednesday, needed only a set into the game to stamp its class against the hapless Lady Cardinals, 25-1, behind starters Janice Jabar, Norie Jane Diaz, Sandra delos Santos, Honey Royse Tubino and liberro Angelique Dionela.
In the second set, the Lady Altas eased off the pedal, inserting four players from their second unit to make it an interesting match, and allow the Lady Cardinals into the fight, 18-11. But Tubino put an end to the Lady Cardinals’ revolt by scoring Perpetual’s last five points to close out the set. Perpetual then re-inserted its starting six in the third set to wrap up the match, 25-9.
Earlier, Emilio Aguinaldo College unraveled a surprise package in the juniors, women’s and even in the men’s category, winning two of the three matches against pre-game favorite College of St. Benilde.
The Brigadiers opened EAC’s inspiring show with a 25-8, 25-11, 25-14 bashing of the Greenies. The Lady Generals followed suit with a hard-earned 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12 upset over the Lady Blazers to make it two in a row for the San Marcelino-based spikers.
The Generals, though, fell short against the Blazers in the featured men’s tiff, losing a hearbreaking decision against a late-rallying CSB, which prevailed after five gruelling sets, 25-15, 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
