As water level at Marikina River remains critical, the city government decided to suspend classes in all levels for public and private schools on Wednesday, July 18.
On Tuesday evening, Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro issued an advisory announcing the class suspension due to continuous monsoon rains.
Monsoon rains, enhanced by Tropical Storm “Henry,” have caused flash floods and class suspensions not only in Marikina but in other parts of Metro Manila as well.
As of 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the second alarm was still raised at the Marikina River, with the water level reaching 16.7 meters. The second alarm was first raised at 1:22 p.m., prompting evacuation efforts.
About 86 families and 500 individuals were holed up at the Malanday covered court evacuation center while more than 30 families were staying at Malanday Elementary School, police disclosed.
Search and rescue
In a report on Tuesday evening, the Eastern Police District (EPD) said a search and rescue team has been dispatched to the Marikina City Police headquarters.
The EPD also noted that as of 5:00 p.m., there had been no reports of any power failure or casualty in the city. Peace and order also remain in the district, it added. /vvp
