Zubiri: ‘No-el’ talks could scare away investors

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri on Saturday has warned that talks on the postponement of the 2019 elections could scare away investors.

Zubiri issued the statement after House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez earlier said it would be “practical” to suspend the elections to allow for a faster shift to the proposed federal form of government. Several senators have also weighed in on the issue.

“Dapat ‘wag muna pag-usapan [‘yan] dahil natatakot ‘yung mga investors,” he told DWIZ.

(We should not talk about it yet because investors are becoming afraid.)

“Sa tingin ko, pag-aralan muna natin ‘yung mga amendment. ‘Wag muna natin banggitin ‘yung ‘No el’ [No election] na ‘yan,” Zubiri said, referring to the proposed federal Constitution which was drafted by the Consultative Committee (Con-com).

He also cautioned the Con-com against rushing the proposed new Charter.

“‘Wag po natin i-rush. Pag-aralan natin ng mabuti ‘yan dahil ito ay magiging panibagong system of government ng ating bansa,” the senator said.

(Let us not rush it. Let’s study it well because it will be a new system of government in our country.)  /muf
