Despite call for ‘no-el,’ Comelec still focused on 2019 polls

Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said the election body remains focused on preparing for the 2019 elections, despite speculations that it could be suspended with the country’s possible shift to a federal form of government.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez’ said it would “practical” if there would be no election amid the proposed Charter change.

Jimenez, however said Alvarez has not moved to postpone the polls.

“I believe the Speaker has not actually or formally initiated any action to postpone the 2019 polls,” Jimenez said in a statement on Thursday.

He also noted that it would be “premature” for the Comelec to comment on the issue for now.

“The institution remains focused on the task at hand: preparing for the 2019 National and Local Elections, scheduled for May 2019,” he said.  /muf
