If anything, the recent survey on the possible winners in the 2019 senatorial elections has revealed one thing — women have taken a big role in politics, a profession once dominated by men.

While still a minority in the senate, five of the top nine senators, including the top four in the Pulse Asia survey were women, which Senator Grace Poe said is a testament to the contribution of women in nation-building.

“The survey is about trust and approval for public service that ought to be felt, especially by the poor,” Poe, who lead the list, said in a message to reporters.

“It is also the people’s affirmation for the work of the women in politics,” she added.

Poe, who was voted by 67.4 percent of the respondents, was followed by Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano (55.7 percent), fellow senator Cynthia Villar (50.1 percent), and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte (46.2 percent).  Senator Nancy Binay was at the ninth spot (37.1 percent).

Poe also thanked Filipinos for their trust, before saying that it is well within their duty to serve the country.

“We are grateful for the trust of our kababayans,” the lawmaker said. “We owe our post to the Filipino people.  Working hard to make life better for them is our chance of paying it forward.” /ee
