Dr. Jose Rizal founded the La Liga Filipina in Manila on July 3, 1892 to unite Filipinos into a compact, vigorous and homogenous body.
The reformist society whose members included Andres Bonifacio was considered the last resort of the propaganda movement.
Branded a subversive by Spanish authorities, Rizal was arrested and deported to Dapitan.
La Liga later disbanded due to differences in principles among its members. This led to the formation of Cuerpo de Compromisarios and the Katipunan.
A historical landmark for the La Liga Filipina was installed on Ylaya Street in Tondo, Manila. —MARIELLE MEDINA, INQUIRER RESEARCH
