Sereno now open to run for senator in 2019 polls

Ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is now open about running for senator in the 2019 midterm elections.

Sereno revealed this in an interview over ANC’s Headstart on Thursday, even as she also admitted she still “needs more time” to think about the matter.

“It’s an option I’m considering,” the former top magistrate answered when asked if she has plans to seek public office.

She was then specifically asked if she is open to run for senator.

“Yes,” Sereno replied.

Despite calls by some Liberal Party (LP) stalwarts for her to run for senator, Sereno has denied any personal or formal invitation from the opposition political party.

“I am weighing all options right now… My gut tells me I need more time,” she said.

Aside from opening her doors to politics, Sereno said she is also “seriously considering” joining independent movements and organizations serving the country.

“There are also many people who are trying to work for the country in movements, organizations, unincorporated associations, networks, peoples organizations, there are so many options out there,” she noted.

She also cited teaching as another path that is “not impossible” for her to take, but  she dismissed any plans of going back to private practice.

LP President Senator Francis Pangilinan earlier said Sereno is welcome to join the party’s slate in the coming 2019 midterm elections.

The Supreme Court affirmed its previous 8-6 vote, ousting Sereno as the country’s top magistrate, last Tuesday, June 19.   /kga
