2 elderly people die in Quezon road mishaps

LUCENA CITY – An octogenarian pedestrian and a septuagenarian motorist died in separate road accidents in Quezon province on Saturday.

The Quezon police headquarters said Luisa Peralta, 84, was accidentally bumped by a passing sports utility vehicle driven by Gerardo Casino in Barangay (village) Isabang in Tabayas City at about 7:50 p.m.

Peralta was crossing the highway when hit. She died while undergoing treatment at the Lucena
United Doctor’s Hospital.

In Padre Burgos town, Miguelito de las Alas, 78, died when the passenger jeepney driven by his son, Joey, lost its brakes while negotiating a sharp curved in Barangay San Isidro at about 9 a.m.

The jeepney fell on its side and pinned the old man to death, a report said.

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old-girl, who was celebrating her birthday, drowned after she was attacked by a swarm of jellyfish in waters off a beach resort in Sariaya, also in Quezon, on Saturday.

Police said Joanna Katrina Rios, a Grade 7 student, and some relatives went to Bendiola beach resort in Barangay Talaan-Aplaya to celebrate her birthday.

At about 2 p.m., the girl and some companions were 50 meters away from shore when they encountered a swarm of jellyfish. The group panicked and the terrified victim, who could not swim, sank to a deep portion of the water.

Residents retrieved the victim and took her to the Lucena United Doctors Hospital where she was declared dead at 3:05 p.m. /cbb
