Classes cancelled in Kabacan Central Elementary School in Kidapawan due to floods

KIDAPAWAN CITY – The Kabacan town government has cancelled classes in all levels at the Kabacan Central Elementary School (KCES) as heavy rains submerged the school campus in knee-deep water on Wednesday.

David Don Saure, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (MDRRMO), said the cancelation was meant to protect the pupils as water had penetrated 14 classrooms.

“We decided to call off classes to ensure the safety of our pupils. We cannot afford to sacrifice our pupils and teachers especially that we are still experiencing heavy rains,” Saure said.

The disaster officer said the school served as catch basin of excess water from Barangay Poblacion as it is situated on low ground.

Some portions of Barangay Poblacion were also submerged in flood, Saure added.

He said the MDRRMO is also monitoring the water level of the Kabacan River and the Rio Grande De Mindanao, as the inclement weather persisted.

Saure said the swelling of these rivers had been disastrous in the past as low-lying areas were inundated and crops were damaged.
