The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday backed President Duterte’s suggestion to arm village chiefs to prepare them for a frontline role in the war on drugs.
In a statement, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said arming village chiefs, however, was viable as a self-defense measure because the officials “are our first line of defense.”
The DILG chief said it was legal for village chiefs to buy firearms and have them licensed. Jonathan Malaya, DILG spokesperson, said the DILG would issue guidelines on arming village chiefs. — JEANNETE I. ANDRADE
