Monsoon rains dampened the celebration of the 120th Independence Day, but that did not stop Vice President Leni Robredo from honoring the Philippine flag and the national hero at a time when she said ‘freedom is in danger.”

Wet from the rain, Robredo gave a snappy salute to Dr. Jose Rizal at the Rizal Park on Tuesday as she led the flag-raising ceremony and the offering of wreath at the statue of the national hero.

“Sa panahon ngayon, tila humaharap na naman ang ating kalayaan sa iba’t ibang mukha ng panganib (Today, our freedom is in danger),” Robredo said in a statement.

“Hindi magpapatalo ang Pilipinong kilala ko (The Filipino I know will not be beaten),” she said. “Sa halip, ang Pilipinong kilala ko ay maninindigan nang buong giting para ipaglaban ang ating kalayaan (Instead, the Filipino I know will stand up boldly to fight for our freedom).” /ee
