Guiuan, Eastern Samar hits 'extreme danger' heat index level at 55°C

MANILA, Philippines — Guiuan in Eastern Samar reached the “extreme danger”  heat index level at 55°C on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.

Based on its latest bulletin, Pagasa Laoag City in Ilocos Norte hit the second-highest heat index  at 48°C followed by three areas under 46°C — MMSU in Batac, Ilocos Norte; Aparri in Cagayan; and Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur despite the rains brought by severe tropical storm  (international name: Ewiniar).

Besides these three, 21 others recorded a heat index of 42 to 51°C, which falls under the “danger” category. The state weather explained this level would likely cause heat cramps and exhaustion, while heat stroke is probable with continued heat or sun exposure.

The following areas hit 45°C:

  • Sinait, Ilocos Sur
  • Catarman, Northern Samar
  • Tacloban, Leyte
  • Surigao City Surigao Del Norte
  • Butuan City, Agusan del Norte
  • Laguindingan Airport, Misamis Oriental

The following three areas were under 44°C:

  • Bacnotan, La Union 44
  • Virac, Catanduanes 44
  • Borongan, Eastern Samar 44

Meanwhile, 12 other areas were under 43 to 42°C:

  • Dagupan City, Pangasinan (43°C)
  • Cuyo, Palawan (43°C)
  • Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental (43°C)
  • Siquijor, Siquijor (43°C)
  • Catbalogan, Samar (43°C)
  • Maasin, Southern Leyte (43°C)
  • Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (43°C)
  • Calayan, Cagayan (42°C)
  • Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (42°C)
  • Panglao International Airport, Bohol (42°C)
  • Mactan International Airport, Cebu (42°C)
  • Davao City, Davao Del Sur (42°C)
