MANILA, Philippines?(UPDATE) At least 10,030 families (47,558 people) spent their Christmas in 28 evacuation centers in the province of Albay as Mayon Volcano continues to act up, the Office of Civil Defense Region 5 (OCD 5) said Friday.
In its latest tally, the OCD 5 reported that as of 9 p.m. Thursday, the total number of displaced families in Legazpi City has reached 2,341 (12,272 individuals), the largest number or evacuees thus far; they are staying in five evacuation centers throughout the city.
The total number of evacuees from six villages (Quirangay, Sua, Cabangan, Tumpa, Salugan, and Anoling) in Camalig town has reached 1,903 families or 8,318 people.
In Daraga town, at least 1,666 families (7,147 people) from the villages of Bañadero, Alcala, and Matnog have moved to three evacuation centers.
A total of 1,913 families or 9,429 people have evacuated from the villages of Lidong, Sta. Misericordia, San Isidro, and Fidel Surtida in Sto. Domingo town.
In the villages of Magapo, Buhian, Bonot, Oson, Comon, Maricoc-Nagsipi, San Isidro, and Buang in Tabaco City, at least 824 families or 4,018 people have been displaced, the OCD 5 said.
At least 665 families or a total of 3,003 people from the villages of Calbayog, San Roque, and Canaway in Malilipot town are taking shelter in evacuation centers.
Meanwhile in Guinobatan town, at least 431 families or 2,036 people have been displaced and in Ligao City, 287 families or 1,344 families have evacuated, the OCD 5 said.
Alert level 4 remains raised over Albay province as Mayon Volcano continues to act up and show signs of a possible imminent hazardous explosion, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday.
Five medical teams from various health units from Manila arrived in Legazpi City Thursday to assist the Joint Task Force Mayon (JTF Mayon) and the Albay Provincial Health Office, said Raffy Alejandro, chief of OCD 5 in his latest report.
The medical teams, which were deployed under the orders of Armed Forces Chief General Victor Ibrado and acting Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales, were dispatched to the evacuation sites in Daraga Elementary School, Daraga High School, and Anislag resettlement area.
Likewise, 11-man medical team from the Armed Forces General Headquarters in Quezon City together with the members of JTF Mayon conducted a medical mission at Baligang Elementary School evacuation center in Camalig, Albay.
The deployments of medical teams were in accordance with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo?s orders to conduct medical missions to ensure that evacuees receive appropriate health care, Alejandro said.
The Naval Forces Southern Luzon and the Philippine Navy also provided six personnel and two M35 military trucks to deliver non-food items from the Naval Station Julhasan Arasain to the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
