MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs has lauded the participation of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the efforts to release Irish priest Michael Sinnott.
The European Commission, which is the European Union’s executive arm, also welcomed the news of Sinnott's release, noting the positive this would have on the peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
"It is with relief and elation that the DFA welcomes the safe release of Fr. Sinnott. We note the indispensible role played by the MILF central leadership in securing his release," the DFA said in a statement Thursday morning.
"These circumstances underscore the obligation of both sides in maintaining an environment conducive to the conduct of peace talks, which we all hope will bring lasting peace and progress to Mindanao," it added.
Meanwhile, the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines followed up its Wednesday statement of optimism over the peace negotiations.
"The European Commission welcomes the good news. We hope that these developments will have a positive impact on the process and will facilitate the resumption of talks, as wished for in the heads of mission's statement released yesterday," the delegation said in a statement when asked for its reaction to Sinnott’s release.
