Solon distances self from cockfight gamblers

TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Compostela Valley Representative Manuel “Way Kurat” Zamora said he has nothing to do with a group of cockfighting aficionados seeking the approval of the Commission on Elections as a partylist organization for the 2010 elections.

Zamora said what he was pushing for Comelec’s approval was his 1-Aim or Adhikain ng Industriyang Magmamanok, which he said, “really represents the marginalized sector of the cockfighting business” and should not be confused with Alyansa ng mga Sabungero.

He said 1-Aim represented “the common people making a living in cockfighting.” These include the "kristos" or bet-takers, peddlers and hawkers in cockfighting arenas, as well as backyard and small-time gamefowl breeders.

The Compostela Valley representative, known for biking to Congress from his house and advocating the planting of calamansi, said he was happy when the Comelec questioned the application of the Alyansa ng mga Sabungero.

“This group does not really represent the marginalized sector… How can you place a bet in cockfights when you do not have money?” Zamora asked, stressing that members of the other partylist group were moneyed individuals.

“Our group wants to help those poor people earning a living in cockfights. We are not protecting gamblers,” Zamora said.

Zamora said he had written the Comelec and explained why his group’s application should be approved.

“I assured them in no way I will become a nominee,” he said.

Zamora’s term as congressman ends in 2010.

Although only organized last June 29, Zamora said he “drew inspiration” from Ang Kasangga, the partylist group that First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo’s sister organized for balut vendors.

“The 1-Aim could be complementary to that; our group would provide the eggs for their balut,” he said in jest.
