MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Police shot dead a man who held a boy hostage for 10 hours Friday in Pangasinan province.
Narciso Mandapat, who was believed to be mentally deranged, was killed by lawmen as a "final option" at past 6 p.m., said Superintendent Michael Nicolas, deputy director of operations of Pangasinan.
Nicolas said police finally decided to rescue the child when they allegedly saw Mandapat stabbing him on the neck with a kitchen knife.
Mandapat barged into the Navarro home in the village of Poblacion I in Sual town at around 9 a.m. and grabbed their five-year old son.
Nicolas said the suspect was apprehended by village officials but escaped, leading to the hostage-taking.
Mandapat made no demands, Nicolas said.
The child was rushed to the hospital for treatment and was now in stable condition, Nicolas said.
