MANILA, Philippines ? Nearly 13 months away from her term's end, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has imposed a deadline on local chief executives to comply with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

?There's a low rate of compliance. She wants 50 percent of local government units to comply with the law by June,'' Secretary Heherson Alvarez told reporters in Payatas, Quezon City.

Arroyo witnessed a briefing on compliance with RA 9003 by Environment Secretary Lito Atienza and on climate change by Alvarez, who is her adviser on climate change, at the Payatas dump site.
