MANILA, Philippines--With the idea of keeping it both informative and entertaining, a radio drama has been launched to teach the country?s farming communities about organic farming.
With radio as being the most accessible medium for information and news among Filipinos, particularly those in the provinces, the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED) airing the radio drama in collaboration with Go! Organic Philippines Consortium.
The radio drama is designed to teach local farmers trends on organic farming, according to FIT-ED Senior Program Manager Liezl Formilleza-Dunuan.
The radio drama is the first attempt at changing the format of the radio education program, Formilleza-Dunuan said.
She said they wanted to try how effective a radio drama would be in informing farmers about the benefits of organic farming.
"Many Filipinos are familiar with radio drama and we want to utilize its popularity. We'll be conducting an evaluation soon to see its effectivity," Dunuan added.
She said that among the learning topics featured in the radio drama include the dangers of using pesticides on plants and human health, the higher output of using organic farming techniques and their environmental benefits.
Dunuan said the story is relevant to the lives of many Filipino farmers.
She said the groups involved in the radio show also advocate safe measures of farming to help the country?s agricultural industry.
Dunuan said the shows would be uploaded on FIT-ED's website.
Currently, the first episode is already uploaded and ready for listening.
The radio show is the second phase of the FIT-ED's Education for all Thru Radio Project.
The first one was a training program through radio aimed at elementary math and science teachers, which started in 2007.
The Department of Agriculture is also involved in the new radio drama project.
The show is entitled "Si Lani at ang Pangako ng Lupa," which chronicles the lives of a farming family. The organic education aspect is interwoven with the story.
The show will be delivered in 14, 30-minute episodes, every Sunday from 8:30 am to 9 am on DZRB.
