MANILA, Philippines — First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo's condition has stabilized after suffering from stomach cramps and back pains that had forced President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to make an emergency landing in Japan before midnight Friday, Malacañang said.

President Arroyo will push through with her trip to Lima, Peru, for a summit meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and leave her husband in Japan to undergo further medical tests, said a Palace statement released by the office of Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno before dawn Saturday.

The President's charted Philippine Airlines flight, which was bound for Lima via Los Angeles, was forced to land in Osaka, Japan at around 11 p.m., Manila time.

"First Gentleman Mike Arroyo is now stable and okay," the statement said. “The President and her entourage will continue with its flight but the First Gentleman will remain in Japan for further analysis from his personal doctors, who were sent to Japan to see his condition.”

"The First Gentleman will fly back to Manila as soon as his doctors give him clearance to travel," the statement added.

It said Puno received an update on the First Gentleman’s health condition from Representative Rodolfo Antonino of Nueva Ecija province, who is on the President's entourage.

The statement said Mr. Arroyo suffered from "stomach cramps and back pains" at mid-flight, and doctors on board decided on an emergency landing because he exhibited those same symptoms as before he underwent heart surgery in 2007.
