9 die in Negros Occidental ambush

Gunmen hiding in a sugarcane field ambushed early Sunday a truckload of policemen and village guards, killing nine and wounding nine others in a hinterland village at La Castellana town, 28 kilometers south of here.

Mt. Kanlaon temporarily closed to trekkers in wake of tremor

Mount Kanlaon, an active volcano, has been declared temporarily closed to mountaineers after large cracks, believed to have been caused by Monday’s 6.9-magnitude earthquake, were observed at its crater and land surfaces, a local official said yesterday.
